Non-specific bacterial and cutaneous cellular components refers to a broad range of biological molecules, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, that are targeted by non-selective antimicrobial agents (DrugBank DB09096). These agents, such as benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide, do not bind to a specific receptor but instead act through the release of reactive oxygen species or other oxidative mechanisms that denature proteins and disrupt cell membranes (StatPearls NBK507814). This non-specific action is effective against a wide spectrum of bacteria, making it useful in treating conditions like acne vulgaris and preventing wound infections (PubMed PMID: 22359483). However, the lack of specificity means that host cells, such as keratinocytes and fibroblasts, can also be damaged, potentially leading to skin irritation or delayed healing (PubChem CID: 784). This classification is typically used in pharmacology to describe the multi-faceted, non-targeted impact of topical antiseptics and disinfectants. By attacking multiple cellular components simultaneously, these drugs minimize the risk of bacterial resistance development compared to site-specific antibiotics. Consequently, they remain a cornerstone of dermatological therapy and surgical site preparation.
