Non-specific bacterial components refer to a broad and heterogeneous collection of molecular structures derived from bacteria, including lipopolysaccharides (LPS), peptidoglycans, flagellin, and bacterial DNA containing CpG motifs (StatPearls, 2023). These components are collectively recognized by the host's innate immune system as Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs) via various Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs) such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and NOD-like receptors (NLRs) (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2020). In clinical practice, these components are often utilized as immunomodulators or adjuvants to stimulate a robust immune response, most notably in the use of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine for the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (National Cancer Institute, 2023). Because the term describes a functional group of diverse molecules rather than a single, well-defined protein or receptor, it is often used as a placeholder in pharmacological databases for treatments that rely on complex bacterial mixtures or lysates (European Respiratory Review, 2022). While effective in triggering anti-tumor or anti-pathogen activity, the administration of non-specific bacterial components carries risks of systemic inflammation, cytokine release syndrome, and hypersensitivity reactions (Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2019).
