Target intelligence / Profile preview
Non-specific blood components and plasma volume refers to the complex mixture of water, electrolytes, and proteins that constitute the liquid portion of the blood, serving as the primary medium for transporting nutrients, gases, and waste products (StatPearls, 2023). While not a single molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, this physiological compartment is the focus of volume replacement therapy in clinical settings to maintain hemodynamic stability and organ perfusion (Merck Manual, 2022). Therapeutic interventions targeting this compartment include the administration of crystalloids, such as normal saline, and colloids, such as albumin or hydroxyethyl starch, which act by increasing intravascular volume through osmotic or oncotic pressure (Wikipedia, 2024). This target is critical in the management of life-threatening conditions like hypovolemic shock, hemorrhage, and severe dehydration (NIH, 2023). However, manipulation of plasma volume requires careful monitoring of biomarkers like central venous pressure and hematocrit to avoid complications such as pulmonary edema, electrolyte imbalances, or dilutional coagulopathy (PubMed, 2021).
Volume expansion through osmotic and oncotic pressure regulation to restore intravascular fluid levels and maintain organ perfusion.
