The Non-specific cellular components of spermatozoa and uterine environment represent the physiological and structural elements of the reproductive system that serve as the site of action for local contraceptive agents. This target category encompasses the lipid bilayer of the sperm plasma membrane and the biochemical milieu, such as pH levels, within the vaginal and uterine cavities. Rather than interacting with a specific protein or receptor, drugs targeting these components, such as the surfactant Nonoxynol-9, exert their effect through the physical disruption of cellular membranes (PubChem). This disruption leads to the loss of sperm motility and the inability of the sperm to undergo the acrosome reaction, thereby preventing fertilization (StatPearls).
