Non-specific microbial and viral components refer to a broad and heterogeneous group of molecular structures, such as lipopolysaccharides, peptidoglycans, and viral nucleic acids, that are characteristic of pathogens but absent in the host. These components, often categorized as Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs), are recognized by the innate immune system's Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs), such as Toll-like receptors, to initiate a defensive immune response (Janeway et al., 2001). In a pharmacological context, this term does not describe a single, specific molecular target but rather a collective category of substances that antiseptics and disinfectants act upon non-selectively. For instance, agents like ethanol or povidone-iodine work by denaturing proteins and disrupting lipid membranes across a wide spectrum of bacteria, fungi, and viruses (McDonnell & Russell, 1999). Because it encompasses a vast range of chemically distinct molecules rather than a specific protein or receptor, it is considered an ill-defined or incorrect target for modern precision drug design (Kumar et al., 2011).
