Overview

Non-specific oral surfaces and biofilms refer to the collective biological and physical substrates within the oral cavity, including the acquired pellicle on tooth enamel and the complex microbial communities known as dental plaque (NIH, 2023). These surfaces are not defined by a single molecular entity but represent a dynamic environment where microbial colonization can lead to oral diseases such as dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis (StatPearls, 2023). Therapeutic agents targeting these surfaces, such as chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, and various essential oils, typically act through non-specific mechanisms like the disruption of microbial cell membranes or the inhibition of bacterial adhesion (PubChem, 2024). Unlike targeted therapies that bind to specific receptors, these treatments aim to broadly reduce the microbial load and disrupt the structural integrity of the biofilm matrix (PubMed, 2022). Consequently, the efficacy of such interventions is often monitored through clinical indices of plaque accumulation and gingival health rather than molecular biomarkers. Managing these surfaces is critical for preventing the progression of oral infections and maintaining the balance of the oral microbiome.
