Overview

Non-structural maintenance of chromosomes element 1 homolog (NSMCE1) is a protein component of the SMC5/6 complex, involved in the maintenance of genome integrity, DNA damage response, and DNA repair. NSMCE1 contains a RING-type zinc finger domain conferring E3 ubiquitin ligase activity, and mediates protein dimerization and protein-protein interactions necessary for complex assembly. The protein is ubiquitously expressed in the nucleus across diverse tissue types and operates as a structural and regulatory element in chromosomal maintenance. Although not currently considered a direct therapeutic target, NSMCE1 is essential for cellular survival in response to genotoxic stress through its role in the repair of damaged DNA strands and may have indirect implications in diseases characterized by genomic instability.
