It lacks a polysaccharide capsule, making it "non-typeable." NTHi primarily acts as an opportunistic pathogen, causing diseases like otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Its pathogenicity is attributed to adhesion mechanisms, immune evasion, and surface-exposed moonlighting proteins. Treatment involves antibiotics tailored to the site and severity of the infection.
