Overview

Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) antigens are surface molecules expressed by strains of Haemophilus influenzae lacking a polysaccharide capsule. These antigens, including outer membrane proteins (OMPs) like P6, adhesins such as HMW1 and HMW2, and lipooligosaccharides (LOS), mediate bacterial adhesion, colonization, and immune evasion. Due to significant antigenic variability between strains, developing broadly protective NTHi vaccines remains a challenge. NTHi is a major cause of respiratory tract infections, including otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, COPD exacerbations, and pneumonia, particularly in regions with widespread Hib vaccination.
