Target intelligence / Profile preview
Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is a highly conserved surveillance pathway present in all eukaryotes. Its primary function is to maintain the fidelity of gene expression by identifying and degrading messenger RNA (mRNA) transcripts that contain premature termination codons (PTCs), also known as nonsense mutations. By eliminating these faulty mRNAs, NMD prevents the synthesis of truncated proteins that could be deleterious or have dominant-negative effects on cellular function.
