Nonspecific calcium uptake and homeostasis pathways refer to the integrated biological systems and signaling networks responsible for maintaining precise calcium ion (Ca2+) concentrations within the extracellular fluid and intracellular compartments (StatPearls, 2023). Calcium homeostasis is fundamental to numerous physiological processes, including skeletal integrity, muscle contraction, and neurotransmitter release (NIH, 2023). Dysregulation of these pathways is a central feature in various pathologies, ranging from metabolic bone diseases like osteoporosis to cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders (PubMed, 2022). Because this term describes a broad physiological process involving multiple distinct proteins rather than a single molecular entity, it is not classified as a specific therapeutic target. Instead, pharmacological interventions typically target specific components within these pathways, such as using calcimimetics to modulate the calcium-sensing receptor or calcium channel blockers to treat hypertension (NCBI, 2023).
