Nonspecific microbial and cellular targets refers to a classification for therapeutic agents that do not interact with a single, well-defined molecular entity such as a specific receptor or enzyme. Instead, these agents typically exert their biological effects through broad physical or chemical mechanisms that affect multiple cellular components simultaneously (McDonnell & Russell, 1999). Common examples include antiseptics and disinfectants like ethanol and povidone-iodine, which function by denaturing proteins and disrupting lipid bilayers across a wide range of organisms (CDC, 2008). Other agents in this category may act as oxidizing agents, generating reactive oxygen species that cause widespread damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids (StatPearls, 2023). Because these actions are non-selective, these substances are highly effective at destroying bacteria, fungi, and viruses, making them essential for wound care and surface sterilization. However, this lack of selectivity also means they can be toxic to host tissues if used systemically or at high concentrations. In pharmacological databases, this designation serves as a catch-all for drugs with multi-faceted mechanisms or those whose precise molecular targets have not yet been characterized. Consequently, it represents a functional grouping rather than a specific biological target in the traditional sense of drug discovery.
