Overview

Nonspecific skin and microbial components is a pharmacological designation for the collective biological structures—such as cell membranes, cytoplasmic proteins, and nucleic acids—that serve as the site of action for broad-spectrum topical antiseptics and disinfectants (Bigliardi et al., 2017). Unlike traditional therapeutic targets that involve specific binding to a single protein or receptor, these components are affected through generalized chemical and physical processes (Lim & Kam, 2008). Common mechanisms include the denaturation of proteins, the dissolution of lipid membranes, and the oxidation of cellular constituents, which lead to rapid microbial death (Finnegan et al., 2010). This target is primarily relevant in the context of preventing and treating localized infections, preparing skin for surgical procedures, and managing chronic wounds (Boyce & Pittet, 2002). While highly effective against a diverse range of pathogens, the nonspecific nature of these interactions can also lead to host tissue irritation or impaired healing if the agents are used at cytotoxic concentrations (Manganyi & Ateba, 2020).

Mechanism of action

Drugs targeting these components act through broad-spectrum, non-selective mechanisms such as protein denaturation, lipid membrane disruption, and oxidative damage to cellular structures (Bigliardi et al., 2017; Lim & Kam, 2008).
