Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Main Protease (Mpro)

Target
Mpro
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Cysteine protease
01

Overview

The main protease of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), also known as Mpro or 3C-like protease (3CLpro), is a cysteine protease crucial for viral replication and pathogenesis. It cleaves the large viral replicase polyproteins pp1a and pp1ab at multiple sites, generating functional non-structural proteins. MERS-CoV Mpro also cleaves cellular substrates like MAVS, suppressing innate immune responses. It functions as a homodimer and is a promising target for antiviral drug development.
