Norepinephrine (NE)

Target
NE
Molecular classification
Catecholamine, Neurotransmitter, Hormone, Phenethylamine
01

Overview

Norepinephrine, also known as noradrenaline, is both a neurotransmitter and a hormone that plays a central role in the body's "fight-or-flight" response. It is involved in vasoconstriction, increasing heart rate, regulating mood, and mobilizing energy stores. Dysregulation of norepinephrine systems is implicated in various conditions, including hypotension, shock, ADHD, depression, and anxiety.

NoradrenalineLevarterenol

Mechanism of action

Norepinephrine exerts its effects through binding to adrenergic receptors (alpha1, alpha2, beta1, beta2, beta3), which are G protein-coupled receptors. This binding leads to various downstream effects depending on the receptor subtype, including vasoconstriction, increased heart rate and contractility, smooth muscle relaxation, and lipolysis.
