Overview

The norepinephrine transporter (NET), encoded by the SLC6A2 gene, is a membrane protein responsible for the reuptake of synaptically released norepinephrine from the synaptic cleft back into presynaptic neurons. This process terminates the action of norepinephrine and maintains neurotransmitter homeostasis. NET is a target for many antidepressants and psychostimulant drugs, and its dysregulation is implicated in several neuropsychiatric disorders.
