Norepinephrine Transporter Protein 1 (NET)

Target
NET
Molecular classification
Transporter, Sodium:neurotransmitter symporter family
01

Overview

The norepinephrine transporter (NET), encoded by the SLC6A2 gene, is a multi-pass membrane protein responsible for the reuptake of norepinephrine into presynaptic nerve terminals. This process regulates norepinephrine homeostasis in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Dysregulation or genetic variation in NET has been implicated in several conditions, including ADHD, depression, and pain disorders. NET is a target for many antidepressants and psychostimulant drugs.

02

Mechanism of action

Inhibits norepinephrine reuptake by binding to the NET protein and blocking the transport of norepinephrine from the synaptic cleft back into the presynaptic neuron.
