Norovirus Capsid Protein VP1 (VP1)

Target
VP1
Molecular classification
Structural protein, Capsid protein
01

Overview

Norovirus capsid protein VP1 is the major structural protein forming the outer shell of noroviruses, a leading cause of acute viral gastroenteritis. VP1 self-assembles into an icosahedral capsid and interacts with host cell receptors such as histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs). The P2 subdomain mediates HBGA binding, a key determinant of strain-specific infectivity. Sequence diversity in P2 contributes to antigenic variation and immune evasion. VP1 is a key target for vaccine development, with virus-like particles (VLPs) based on VP1 showing promise as immunogens.
