The Norovirus GI.1 virus-like particle (VLP) is a recombinant, non-infectious structure that mimics the native norovirus capsid but lacks viral genetic material and non-structural proteins. It is composed of the VP1 capsid protein, which self-assembles into an icosahedral shell. VLPs are used as surrogates to study virus attachment, entry mechanisms, immunogenicity, and environmental stability. They bind to histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) via the P2 domain of VP1 and can elicit genotype-specific immune responses. GI.1 VLPs are stable within a pH range of 4.0 to 8.0 and are produced recombinantly for research purposes, including vaccine development and serological assays.
