Norovirus major capsid protein VP1 is a self-associating structural component that forms the protective outer layer of noroviruses. It plays critical roles in virus assembly, stability, host specificity through receptor engagement (notably histo-blood group antigens), and immune system targeting. Its structure comprises distinct domains responsible for both physical integrity of the virion and interactions with external molecules—including those relevant to immunity or infection inhibition. Recombinant versions are widely used both as research tools and potential vaccines due to their ability to form non-infectious VLPs that closely resemble native virus particles structurally and antigenically.
