Overview

North American coral snake venom toxins are a complex mixture of proteins and peptides primarily produced by snakes of the genus Micrurus, specifically Micrurus fulvius and Micrurus tener (StatPearls, 2023). The most significant components are alpha-neurotoxins, belonging to the three-finger toxin (3FTx) family, and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes (PubMed, PMID: 25448391). These toxins primarily target the neuromuscular junction, where alpha-neurotoxins competitively bind to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, leading to post-synaptic blockade and subsequent flaccid paralysis (NIH, 2022). Clinical envenomation can result in life-threatening respiratory failure due to paralysis of the diaphragm (StatPearls, 2023). Treatment involves the administration of specific equine-derived antivenom, such as Antivenin (Micrurus fulvius), which contains antibodies that neutralize the toxins before they can bind to their receptors (FDA, 2021). Because the binding of these toxins is often high-affinity, prompt administration of antivenom is critical for preventing the progression of neurological symptoms (PubMed, PMID: 30195005).
