North American crotalid venom proteins and peptides refer to the collective group of antigenic substances found in the venom of pit vipers, specifically those from the Crotalus and Agkistrodon genera (Mackessy, 2010). This category encompasses a wide range of proteins, including snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs), serine proteinases (SVSPs), phospholipases A2 (PLA2), and C-type lectins, as well as minor components like disintegrins and hyaluronidases (Slagboom et al., 2017). These proteins are responsible for the clinical manifestations of envenomation, such as local tissue destruction, systemic hemorrhage, and severe coagulopathy (Warrell, 2010). In medical practice, these proteins serve as the primary targets for polyvalent antivenoms like CroFab and Anavip, which consist of antibody fragments that bind and neutralize the toxins (Bush et al., 2015). The therapeutic goal is to sequester these immunogenic proteins, preventing them from interacting with host targets like fibrinogen or vascular endothelium (Sanchez et al., 2003). Monitoring patient response involves assessing coagulation parameters and platelet counts to ensure the neutralization of these venom components (Warrell, 2010).
