Vaccines utilize antigens, or genetic templates for antigens, to stimulate a broad and coordinated response from the host's immune system (NIH, 2023). This process involves the activation of innate immune sensors, antigen presentation by dendritic cells, and the subsequent recruitment of the adaptive immune system, specifically T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes (StatPearls, 2023). Unlike traditional pharmacotherapy that targets a specific protein to modulate a pathway, vaccination aims to establish long-term immunological memory and the production of protective antibodies (CDC, 2024). Consequently, the target is the collective immune repertoire of the individual rather than a discrete receptor or enzyme. This broad activation is essential for providing durable protection against infectious pathogens and, in the case of therapeutic vaccines, malignant cells (PubMed, 2022).
