This gene encodes a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed antisense to the protein-coding CCDC12 (Coiled-coil domain containing 12) gene. Antisense lncRNAs are RNA molecules transcribed from the opposite DNA strand relative to a gene, commonly overlapping with their sense partner at least partially. Many antisense transcripts participate in regulation of gene expression at the transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and epigenetic levels, although biological functions of most individual lncRNAs remain uncharacterized. Known mechanisms for natural antisense transcripts include transcriptional interference, RNA masking, double-stranded RNA-dependent silencing, and chromatin remodeling. No specific function, biomarker role, or therapeutic relevance has been documented for ENSG00000294040 as of now.
