Overview

This transcript is classified as a natural antisense transcript, meaning it is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) produced from the DNA strand opposite to that encoding the TSPAN3 gene. NATs are a widespread class of RNAs present in both humans and other eukaryotes, predominantly involved in the regulation of their sense (protein-coding) gene partners. They can modulate gene expression through effects on transcription, RNA processing, stability, and chromatin architecture. While the biological function of the antisense transcript to TSPAN3 specifically is not yet characterized, similar antisense lncRNAs are known to regulate their partner genes’ expression in cis or trans, often via changes to DNA methylation, histone modification, or the formation of double-stranded RNA. There is currently no evidence that this transcript is a therapeutic target, disease marker, or drug interaction partner, nor is it known to have a direct role in any human disease. Natural antisense transcripts are not conventionally regarded as druggable targets unless they are demonstrated to have well-established and actionable roles in disease. The function of any NAT is often highly context-specific and may remain uncharacterized for many lncRNAs. TSPAN3 (tetraspanin 3) itself is a protein involved in cell migration and myelination, but this does not directly ascribe function to the antisense transcript.
