NRXN3 antisense RNA 1 (NRXN3-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed in the antisense direction relative to the NRXN3 gene. Antisense RNAs like NRXN3-AS1 typically regulate the expression of their sense (partner) gene, in this case NRXN3, through mechanisms including transcriptional interference, modulation of mRNA processing, or effects on chromatin structure[3][5]. However, NRXN3-AS1 itself is not a protein, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other classical therapeutic target. Rather, it is a regulatory RNA molecule whose aberrant expression could in principle influence NRXN3 gene function, but as of now there is no direct evidence of druggable interactions, clinical biomarkers, or established disease roles specifically for NRXN3-AS1. The general action of antisense RNAs can be either in cis (locally modulating the paired gene) or in trans (affecting other loci), most commonly through control of gene transcription, RNA stability, or translation[3][5]. NRXN3 itself encodes a protein involved in synaptic cell adhesion in the nervous system and has roles in neurological and psychiatric disorders[1][2][4], but NRXN3-AS1 is a non-protein-coding transcript and not currently considered a direct therapeutic target.
