NS5B is a nonstructural protein of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) that functions as an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). Its primary role is to catalyze the replication of HCV's viral RNA genome by using the positive-sense viral RNA strand as a template, facilitating the polymerization of ribonucleoside triphosphates (rNTPs) during this process. It is a major antiviral drug target because inhibiting it halts HCV genome replication.
