Overview

NSA2 ribosome biogenesis factor is a highly conserved nucleolar protein involved in the assembly and biogenesis of the large (60S) ribosomal subunit[1][3]. It is essential for cell cycle regulation and cell proliferation. NSA2 is not considered a classic therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter; rather, it is one of several ribosome biogenesis factors necessary for proper ribosome assembly. Increased expression of NSA2 has been observed in certain disease states, such as diabetic nephropathy. Multiple alternative splice variants and pseudogenes have been identified for NSA2[1][3]. The protein may play a role in the quality control of pre-60S ribosomal particles, but no direct drug targeting or clinical biomarker usage is currently described[3].
