Overview

Nuclear envelope integral membrane protein 1 (NEMP1) is an integral membrane protein of the inner nuclear membrane (INM) that interacts with nuclear lamins and the small GTPase Ran. NEMP1 is involved in the organization of the nuclear envelope and chromatin, with evidence suggesting a role in the accumulation of RanGTP at the nuclear periphery and regulation of nuclear transport. It is functionally required for proper eye development in model organisms such as Xenopus, and is evolutionarily conserved across species, including plants. NEMP1 forms oligomers and complexes through its transmembrane domains and interacts directly with lamins (via region A) and GTP-bound Ran (via region B), representing a newly recognized type of RanGTP-binding protein. Alterations in NEMP1 levels can disrupt early gene expression programming, especially during eye development. There are currently no known drugs that target NEMP1, nor evidence for its use as a biomarker or established therapeutic target.
