Nuclear factor 1 A-type (NFIA) is a DNA-binding transcription factor encoded by the NFIA gene in humans. NFIA belongs to the Nuclear factor I family, which regulates gene expression by binding to specific DNA sequences as dimers. It plays a central role in the development of the central nervous system, particularly in initiating glial cell differentiation, and is implicated in both developmental processes (such as promoting the differentiation of neural stem cells into astrocytes and other glia) and adult tissue maintenance. NFIA is abnormally regulated in various cancers, including gliomas, hepatocellular carcinoma, and esophageal carcinoma, where it can either promote tumor progression or act as a tumor suppressor, depending on context. Additionally, it plays a role in CNS injury by regulating astrocyte responses and may be a marker for CNS tumor grading and disease progression.
Not applicable. No therapeutic agents directly modulate NFIA; however, experimental modulation could impact downstream gene expression, cell differentiation, and proliferation.
