Overview

Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 1 (NFE2L1), also known as Nrf1, is a transcription factor. It belongs to the cap ‘n’ collar (CNC) subfamily of basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors. NFE2L1 is ubiquitously expressed and primarily located at the endoplasmic reticulum membrane under basal conditions. In response to cellular stresses, it undergoes cleavage, translocates into the nucleus, and acts as an active transcription factor. It plays roles in oxidative stress response, proteostasis, metabolism, cell differentiation, and inflammation. Cytoplasmic and nuclear localization patterns are associated with clinical features in diseases like diffuse large B cell lymphoma.
