Nuclear FMR1 interacting protein 2 (NUFIP2)

Target
NUFIP2
Molecular classification
RNA-binding protein, Other (not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor)

Overview

The "novel transcript, antisense to NUFIP2" is a putative or computationally predicted non-coding RNA that would be located on the opposite genomic strand of the NUFIP2 locus. There is currently no evidence that this antisense transcript is a protein-coding gene, a validated non-coding RNA with regulatory function, or that it has been experimentally characterized or linked to disease. The established gene in this region is NUFIP2 (Nuclear FMR1 interacting protein 2), which encodes an RNA-binding protein implicated in neuronal function and mRNA turnover. NUFIP2 acts as a cofactor with Roquin proteins in promoting post-transcriptional mRNA decay by binding to specific stem-loop structures in target mRNAs, including those involved in immune modulation (e.g., ICOS, Ox40). NUFIP2 localizes to cytoplasmic RNA granules (stress granules, P bodies) and is expressed in the brain and immune cells. No evidence exists for therapeutic targeting, interactions with drugs, or clinical biomarker use for either the antisense transcript or NUFIP2 as a direct drug target.
