Nuclear pore associated protein 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000278128, also known as LOC100129616) is a non-protein-coding genomic element that resembles the functional nuclear pore associated protein 1 gene (NPAP1)[5]. Pseudogenes like this arise through duplication or mutation events that disable the original protein-coding function; typically, they are considered nonfunctional remnants in the genome[2][6]. However, emerging research indicates some pseudogenes may produce RNA molecules involved in gene regulation, such as serving as competing endogenous RNAs or generating small interfering RNAs that regulate their parent protein-coding genes, although these functions are not confirmed for nuclear pore associated protein 1 pseudogene specifically[4][6]. This particular pseudogene has not been shown to code for a functional protein or be involved in direct disease mechanisms, and it is not a therapeutic target in current medical practice[5].
