Nuclear receptor subfamily 2 group F member 1 (NR2F1), also known as COUP transcription factor 1 (COUP-TFI), is a highly conserved orphan nuclear receptor and transcription factor that binds specific DNA motifs to regulate the expression of multiple genes during embryonic and neural development[1][2][3][5]. NR2F1 functions as a master regulator in neural progenitor cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration, and it is essential for regional identity acquisition in developing cerebral cortex and visual system[3][5]. Its activity can act as a gene activator or repressor depending on context, typically involving chromatin remodeling and interaction with co-activators or co-repressors[3]. Mutations in NR2F1 cause Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf optic atrophy syndrome in humans and are implicated in multiple other neurodevelopmental and cancer-associated roles[1][3][5].
