NR4A2, also known as NURR1, is an orphan nuclear receptor and transcription factor crucial for the development, maintenance, and survival of midbrain dopaminergic neurons. It regulates gene expression by binding to specific DNA response elements and is implicated in several disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is considered a potential therapeutic target, but no approved therapies currently exist targeting this pathway directly.
