Nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1)

Target
NRF1
Molecular classification
Transcription factor

Overview

Nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1) is a transcription factor that homodimerizes and regulates the expression of nuclear genes essential for mitochondrial biogenesis, oxidative phosphorylation, cellular growth, respiration, heme biosynthesis, and mitochondrial DNA transcription and replication. NRF1 plays a central role in coordinating communication between nuclear and mitochondrial genomes by directly regulating several nuclear-encoded electron transport chain proteins and indirectly influencing mitochondrial gene expression through activation of factors such as TFAM (mitochondrial transcription factor A).
