Nuclear RNA export factor 5 (NXF5) is a member of the nuclear RNA export factor family which binds RNA and interacts with the RNA nuclear export-associated protein p15/NXT. It is predicted to be involved in the export of mRNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, and may also play a role in localizing mRNA within neurons. Most transcript variants are likely subject to nonsense-mediated decay and may not produce functional proteins in vivo, and it is described as a pseudogene in some databases. Disruption of NXF5 was identified in a male patient with syndromic mental retardation, implying a potential developmental role. There are no established drugs or specific disease-modifying interventions linked to NXF5, and it is not widely recognized as a druggable target or receptor.
