Nuclear transcription factor Y subunit gamma (NFYC)

Target
NFYC
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, DNA-binding protein, Histone-like protein
01

Overview

Nuclear transcription factor Y subunit gamma is one component of a highly conserved heterotrimeric transcription factor (NF-Y) that specifically binds CCAAT motifs in the promoters of target genes. This subunit (gamma, or C) forms a dimer with the beta subunit (NFYB), allowing association with the alpha subunit (NFYA). NF-Y functions in both activation and repression of gene transcription, depending on its cofactors. The B and C subunits share histone-like motifs, supporting a structural and functional analogy to histone proteins. NFYC is encoded on human chromosome 1 and also hosts intronic microRNAs (miR-30c/e) involved in pancreatic islet cell differentiation and phenotype maintenance[1][2][5].
