Nuclear transport factor 2 like export factor 1 (NXT1) is a protein encoded by the NXT1 gene in humans and is located in the nuclear envelope. It is structurally similar to nuclear transport factor 2 and forms a heterodimer with NXF1 (also known as Tap), which is essential for the nuclear export of mRNA, U1 snRNA, and tRNA through both CRM1-dependent and CRM1-independent pathways. NXT1 stimulates the export of NES-containing proteins and regulates the ability of NXF1 to mediate nuclear mRNA export, playing a crucial role in mRNA metabolism and gene expression. NXT1 is not currently known as a direct target for approved therapeutic drugs, nor are mechanisms of action, biomarkers, or specific safety concerns documented in major drug or biomarker databases as of now. Pathologically, it has some associations with rare neurological conditions, but there is limited evidence supporting a direct causal or therapeutic role. NXT1 interacts closely with NXF1 and requires heterodimerization for function in mRNA export, implicating a broader role in gene regulation and expression.
