The nucleic acid salvage pathway refers to a set of metabolic routes that recycle nucleotides, nucleosides, and bases derived from the degradation of DNA and RNA or taken up from extracellular sources. Instead of synthesizing these molecules de novo (from scratch), cells use salvage pathways to conserve energy and resources by reusing existing components. This process is especially important in tissues with high nucleotide turnover or limited capacity for de novo synthesis. It maintains nucleotide pools, supports DNA/RNA synthesis, and is targeted by anticancer drugs; relevant in metabolic diseases.
