The nucleocapsid protein (NP) of the Ebola virus is a core structural and functional component essential for the virus’s life cycle. It encapsidates the viral single-stranded RNA genome, forming a ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex that is central to genome protection, transcription, replication, and packaging into new virions. The NP forms a helical structure with viral RNA at its core, stabilized by interactions with VP24 and VP35. Disrupting NP function or its interactions with other viral proteins is a potential antiviral strategy.
