The nucleolar and coiled-body phosphoprotein 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000254076, LOC100129367) is a pseudogene, which means it is a nonfunctional segment of DNA that closely resembles a functional gene but has accumulated mutations that prevent it from producing a functional protein. Pseudogenes may arise through gene duplication, reverse transcription, or mutation and are typically considered noncoding genomic sequences. While traditionally regarded as "junk DNA," some pseudogenes are now known to be transcribed into RNA and can contribute to the regulation of their parent protein-coding genes through various noncoding RNA mechanisms, including microRNA decoys or the RNA interference pathway. However, there is no evidence that this particular pseudogene acts as a therapeutic target, functions as a receptor or enzyme, or has any direct disease association or drug interactions. In molecular studies, pseudogenes can complicate genetic analyses due to their sequence similarity with functional genes, and their regulatory roles remain an area of active research.
