Overview

Nucleolar GTP-binding protein 2 (GNL2) is a nucleolar-localized GTPase that binds RNA and associates with pre-60S ribosomal subunits, facilitating their nuclear export and maturation. It plays a critical role in ribosome biogenesis and protein synthesis, and is implicated in the regulation of cell proliferation via modulation of p53/TP53 and downstream proteins. GNL2 acts as an oncogene in several cancers, most notably glioma, with high expression correlating with decreased patient survival. Functional studies show GNL2 silencing impairs cell proliferation, invasion, migration, ribosomal subunit export, and overall protein synthesis, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target and biomarker in oncology.
