Overview

Nucleolar protein interacting with the FHA domain of MKI67 (NIFK) is a human nucleolar phosphoprotein encoded by the MKI67IP gene. NIFK contains an RNA recognition motif (RRM) at its N-terminus and a domain that binds to the forkhead-associated (FHA) domain of the Ki-67 antigen, a protein involved in cell proliferation. The interaction between NIFK and Ki-67 is phosphorylation-dependent, involving sequential modification by CDK1 and GSK3 kinases. NIFK is believed to play a role in mitosis and cell cycle progression, likely through its interactions with RNA and the Ki-67 antigen. While related to cellular proliferation and studied in the context of cancer, NIFK itself is not a direct disease marker or drug target. Its gene is located on chromosome 2.
