Overview

The nucleolin pseudogene (ENSG00000254755) is a segment of DNA similar to the functional nucleolin gene (NCL), but does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes are generally considered nonfunctional remnants from ancestral genes, and most have no biological activity or implication as drug targets. On rare occasions, pseudogenes may regulate their parental genes or other cellular processes by means of non-coding RNAs, but there is no evidence for direct function or disease relevance in this specific case. Pseudogenes are DNA segments that resemble functional genes but cannot encode proteins due to disabling mutations or lack of promoters. The "nucleolin pseudogene" is distinct from nucleolin (NCL) protein, which is functionally significant in ribosomal RNA processing and cancer, but the pseudogene itself is not. Some pseudogenes may express non-coding RNAs that can subtly regulate gene expression; however, this is very rare and not established for this entry.
