Nucleophosmin 1 pseudogene 42 (NPM1P42) is classified as a processed pseudogene, belonging to the nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1) gene family. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but non-functional; they typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and lack coding potential or regulatory function. There are no data indicating that NPM1P42 encodes a protein, participates in known biological processes, or is involved in any disease mechanisms. It is not a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or clinically relevant biomarker. The parent gene NPM1, by contrast, encodes a nucleolar phosphoprotein involved in ribosome biogenesis, cell proliferation, and is relevant in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but NPM1P42 itself has no known function or disease role.
