Overview

Nucleophosmin 1 pseudogene 50 (NPM1P50) is a processed pseudogene derived from the parental NPM1 gene, which encodes the nucleophosmin (NPM, also known as B23, numatrin) protein, a multifunctional nucleolar phosphoprotein that plays key roles in ribosome biogenesis, genomic stability, and regulation of the cell cycle. Unlike the functional NPM1 gene, NPM1P50 is noncoding and typically does not produce a functional protein due to mutations or lack of necessary regulatory sequences. Processed pseudogenes are formed via retrotransposition and integrate randomly in the genome, lacking introns and often being transcriptionally silent. While some pseudogenes can be transcribed and play regulatory roles—such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs or miRNA sponges—no evidence currently links NPM1P50 to such functions.

Mechanism of action

None

03

Biological functions

None established; as a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein under normal circumstances
04

Disease associations

Other (pseudogenes can sometimes act as regulatory RNAs in rare cases, but no evidence exists for direct roles of NPM1P50 in disease)
