Nucleoporin 188 (NUP188) is a large structural protein and an essential component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), which is embedded in the nuclear envelope and mediates selective transport of macromolecules between the cytoplasm and nucleus. NUP188 is part of the NPC scaffold, forming a complex with Nup93 and Nup205, and is critical for nuclear import and export processes. Unlike many vertebrate nucleoporins, NUP188 does not contain canonical FG repeats, but it plays a structural and organizational role within the NPC. It is evolutionarily conserved and shares some structural similarities with nuclear transport receptors, indicating a potential evolutionary relationship between static NPC scaffold components and dynamic transport factors[1][2][3][4].
