Overview

Nucleoporin 58 (NUP58) is a structural protein component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), localized to the nuclear rim in human cells[2][5]. As part of the nucleoporin family, it contributes to the formation of the central channel of the NPC and mediates selective nucleocytoplasmic transport of proteins, RNAs, and ribonucleoprotein complexes between the nucleus and cytoplasm, typically in conjunction with NUP62 and NUP54[1]. NUP58 is not known to be a direct therapeutic target and has no established drug interactions or reported mechanism of drug action. It may serve as a marker of expression variability in early human embryos but is not recognized as a primary biomarker for patient selection or therapeutic monitoring[4]. Alternate splice variants encode different isoforms of the protein[2][5]. No notable safety or toxicity concerns specific to NUP58 have been reported. Key points: - Structural, non-enzymatic component of the NPC - Mediates macromolecular trafficking into/out of the nucleus - Not an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or direct drug target - May be relevant in research settings for nuclear transport, cancer biology, and embryonic gene expression variability
