Nucleoside diphosphate kinase B pseudogene

Molecular classification
Pseudogene[1]
01

Overview

The "Nucleoside diphosphate kinase B pseudogene" is a non-coding DNA sequence in the human genome that shares high sequence similarity with the NME2 gene, which encodes the functional Nucleoside diphosphate kinase B enzyme. Unlike its protein-coding counterpart, this pseudogene does not produce a functional protein product and has no direct biological or clinical role. While its functional gene, NME2, plays a key role in cellular nucleotide homeostasis and is involved in several cellular pathways, the pseudogene itself is not considered a molecular target for therapeutics or diagnostics[1]. This entry is flagged as incorrect as a therapeutic target because pseudogenes, by definition, do not produce active proteins and thus are not directly targeted by drugs or involved in disease mechanisms in the manner that protein-coding genes are[1]. The correct functional target in this family is Nucleoside diphosphate kinase B (NME2).
